Article on Gender analysis of the elasticity of tobacco smoking: The case of three Arab countries

Waterpipe tobacco smoking rates in the Eastern Mediterranean region are among the highest worldwide, yet little evidence exists on its economics. Estimates of demand elasticities for tobacco products are largely limited to cigarettes. This study,  conducted by the Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the Economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking, aimed to estimate own-price and cross-price elasticities of demand for cigarettes and waterpipe tobacco products in Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine. The results of the study serve as a strong evidence base for developing and implementing fiscal policies for tobacco control in the Eastern Mediterranean region that address cigarettes and waterpipe tobacco products.

The Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking (ECON-WTS)

The American University of Beirut (AUB) and its regional partners in Jordan, Palestine, and Egypt propose the Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking (ECON-WTS) to strengthen multidisciplinary and multi-institutional leadership in generating economic evidence to support waterpipe tobacco control.

World No Tobacco Day (WND) virtual competition for the “Youth Anti-Smoking” awareness campaign

In the wake of the ongoing pandemic, AMALOUNA recognized the importance of  carrying on  with its awareness campaign, albeit virtually, and to reach out to the youth in the  community. Accordingly, this virtual competition was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education and Health and the AUB Wellness Center. It was also supported by the National Council for Scientific Research (CNRS)-Lebanon. Students from public and private high schools were invited to design either a poster, video, or pictorial message about smoking (cigarettes, nargileh, e-cigarettes…). The artworks that should promote an anti-smoking environment or show the adverse effects of smoking were scored by a committee and we are sharing the 1st and 2nd winners for each category.

WTS-KH working on law enforcement and advocacy with members of the Parliament

The WTS-KH team has been  in contact with the Chair of the Lebanese Parliament Health Committee, Dr. Assem Araji, to move forward with possible action plans to strengthen Law 174 on tobacco control in Lebanon; however,  the COVID- 19 pandemic slowed the progress and shifted the priorities for the parliamentarians.

It is still the plan of the WTS–KH to hold  a workshop &/or round table discussion for key stakeholders in the country regarding the reinforcement of Lebanon’s Law 174 and its application to waterpipe smoking.  It is also active in drawing the strategy of the future work of the newly founded Coalition for Tobacco Control Advocacy in the country.

    A workshop on tobacco taxation

A workshop on tobacco taxation modelling was held, on August 12th 2020, between the UCT WHO FCTC Taxation knowledge hub team and the  “Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the Economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking (ECON-WTS)  on  how to utilize the Van Walbeek model to design country specific fiscal models. The ECON-WTS is an IDRC funded project that is led by Dr. Rima Nakkash, Associate Professor at AUB Faculty of Health Sciences, Co-director of the WHO Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking Knowledge Hub.  The consortium is collaboration between the American University of Beirut (AUB) and its regional partners in Jordan, Egypt and Palestine, of which the objective is to strengthen multidisciplinary and multi-institutional leadership in generating economic evidence to support waterpipe tobacco control in the region. One of the specific aims of this project is to model the impact of fiscal policies for waterpipe tobacco control on WTS rates, health care costs (WTS-attributable impact), and public revenues. This collaboration between the UCT team and the research team will help in designing curated models that will help in influencing future fiscal policies in the region.
